Most of the problems you will encounter have been experienced by many other
users and are not unique to your computer. Consequently by going to the internet
you will usually find the cause of your problem and hopefully a "quickfix".
TROUBLE LOGGING ON TO THE INTERNET ?
Try WINIPCFG: Start>>>run>>>winipcfg, (provides info about your TCP/IP connection.)
Don't know what "Winipcfg" is...go to Google.com and search on
"what is winipcfg". Then, select: "How to view tcp/ip settings"
USING SEARCH ENGINES TO SOLVE PROBLEMS
In most cases Google or Askjeeves will find answers to your problems.
For example, if you can't access the floppy drive, type in your query
such as "floppy drive failure". The wording doesn't have to be
exact. Try "hard drive error", "Hard drive crash", or "hard disk controller
failure" as other examples.
ERROR MESSAGES
When your computer monitor displays an error message, copy the
message in its entirety, including the error #. Then go to GOOGLE.COM
and type in the message (using quotes at the beginning and end).
Alternatively or in addition you can try ASKJEEVES.COM).
In most cases the search will display one or more sites explaining the error
and provide a solution for it. Depending on the complexity of the solution
you may or may not wish to attempt it. In general I would recommend
that you stay clear of changing the registry.
DRIVERS
If you need to find or replace a driver, the best sites are:
windrivers.com/index.htm or
microsoft.com/help>>>"Find Online Support"
HAVING A VIRUS PROBLEM ?
If you are risking your files and programs by not using an anti-virus program (and
updating it regularly) the windrivers site can direct you to a free online
virus search of your computer. Our CUG site also provides a link for you.
Roadrunner users would be wise to use a FIREWALL, such as ZoneAlarm.
USING A NAME BRAND COMPUTER ?
If you purchased a name brand computer, the company's internet site will usually
have a diagnosis and cure for your problem.
e.g. Dell.com>>>support>>>solutions>>>FAQ or >>> enter key words
e.g. Compaq.com>>>Support Home
FAQ'S AND FORUMS
There are many sites that maintain a list of FAQ's and responses (answers)
to most common and uncommon problems. Similarly USER FORUMS are also good
reference sources.
Help.com (cnet)>>>"ask for help"
computing.net>>>select your OS forum and type in the problem.
zdnet.com/filters/zdhelp>>>experthelp forum
tek-tips.com>>>hot forums (very sophisticated and technical)
THE LAST RESORT
When all else fails, and the problem is not in need of an immediate solution
try posting your question on one of the forums listed above and to the computer company.
Alternatively call one of your grandchildren.
